Fall Master Class: Beginning Tap Dance

Get an overview of the basics of one of the most enjoyable forms of dance in this one-day workshop taught by creator of the highly-rated instructional DVD series Tap Dance Made Easy (and Bridgeport resident), Eli Newsom. This beginning tap dance workshop will de-mystify basic tap dance terminology such as shuffles, flaps, stomps, stamps and other basic steps in a non-competitive atmosphere. No experience or tap shoes required!

About the Class

Who: The workshop is open to non-dancers and dancers alike ages 16+.

What to bring: Wear/bring comfortable workout/dance clothes and tap or jazz/tennis shoes. Tight fitting dance clothes not necessary; dress comfortably, as you might for the gym or going for a jog.

When: Saturday, Oct 24, 2009; 10AM-1PM.

Where: Playhouse on the Green, 177 State St. in downtown Bridgeport

Difficulty level: Absolute Beginning / Beginning. For students with little or no tap experience. This workshop will be low-pressure, informative, and fun! For those students with previous tap dance experience we will spend some time with some more challenging footwork towards the end of the workshop.

What will be taught?: We’ll start with some basic rhythm/musical counting exercises; then we’ll move to an overview of some basic tap terminology, and learn how to produce clean rhythms and improve musicianship…all while getting a great workout! We’ll also view and discuss some famous tap dance sequences from classic movies.

How much does it cost?: $25. If you would like to sign up for the other three Master Classes this fall, you can get them all for $75. Sign up today by e-mailing greenhouse@playhouseonthegreen.org or by calling Alisson Wood at (203)579-2727 ext. 327.

Are tap shoes required?

No! Tap shoes are recommended, but not required. If you don’t own tap shoes please don’t let that dissuade you from attending - simply wear comfortable jazz or tennis shoes. To purchase dance shoes you can shop online (i.e. www.discountdance.com / www.capezio.com) or visit a local dance supply store (going to a store is recommended, as tap shoe size typically differs from street shoe size).
