Fall Master Class: The World of Musical Theater, Sights and Sounds of Broadway

Do you love Broadway musicals? This fascinating class indulges your passion as you explore the origins and development of musical theater and how it pertains to the latest hits on the Great White Way. Performers will benefit from expanding their knowledge of Musical Theater History. Share your favorite musical theater experience with the class and discover shows you never knew existed!

About the Class

Who: The class is open to anyone ages 16+.

What to bring: A notebook and pen to jot down any show or song titles! Also, bring in your own special musical theater memory to share with the other participants.

When: POSTONED UNTIL 2010.

Where: Playhouse on the Green, 177 State St. in downtown Bridgeport

What will be covered in this class?: Focusing on specific composers, performers, directors, and choreographers, this class will give you an overview of the history of musical theater from its genesis with Show Boat and Oklahoma! to the latest hits of Broadway. Rare audio clips will be heard and you will witness some of the original stars of classic shows in performance in TV, film, and other live appearances. The class will finish with an open class discussion and sharing period which gives you a chance to rave about your favorite shows and to find out what the other participants are passionate about.

About the Instructor


Matt Schicker is the former Producing Artistic Director of Playhouse on the Green, where he directed The Wiz, Twelve Angry Jurors, Six Degrees of Separation, The Underpants, and The Santaland Diaries/Season’s Greetings. Formerly, Matt was Executive Director/President of The Gallery Players in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and Membership Director of National Alliance for Musical Theatre. Other directing highlights: The Full Monty, Side Show, Victor/Victoria, Twelve Angry Jurors, Charlie Brown. Producing highlights: Sister Robert Anne’s Cabaret Class directed by Dan Goggin, The Rocky Horror Show, Barnum, Yank! A New Musical (Winner, 2008 New York Innovative Theater Award for Outstanding Production of a Musical; Nominee, 2008 GLAAD Media Award for Best Off-Off Broadway Musical), Hair, The Mystery of Edwin Drood (2003 OOBR Award).
